Brazilian Pepper Exports – Major Setback

US Tariff Impact: The Trump administration’s 50% tariff, coupled with transhipment restrictions, has crippled Brazil’s ability to export pepper to Vietnam and re-export to the USA.
Mislabeling Concerns: Past mislabeling (Brazilian pepper declared as Vietnamese) has now triggered scrutiny by Vietnamese Customs, especially for overdue re-exports.
August Exports: Only 163 MT exported from Brazil in early August – all-time low, signaling market distress.

Vietnamese Market Reaction

Surge in Local Prices: Prices jumped from140,000 VND/kg to 146–147,000 VND/kg, with no firm offers, only floating price indications. Exporters and MNCs are under pressure.
Inventory Check & Customs Scrutiny: Vietnam’s Customs tightening inspection on Brazilian stocks has further squeezed availability.

- Imports (same period): ~1,783 MT

Indonesia’s Role

Increased Demand Expected: With Vietnam’s stocks thinning and Brazil struggling, Indonesian pepper demand is expected to rise significantly. Crop of 2025 seems too small to have any pressure and since import duty to Vietnam is only 0% the entire crop will find home in Vietnam.New crop Light berries was quoted only from one direction at 7500 cnf and Lampung Asta new Crop from one direction only quoted USD 6750 fob for September shipment.
